Grand Cayman

July 19, 2007 9:59 pm

(Ohh… so much to add to this post still…..)

The entire family headed to Grand Cayman for a week of Caribbean relaxation and scuba diving.  David’s mom (a.k.a. “Nana” to the grandkids) and Aunt Judy were also invited.  It was a wonderful situation for everybody.  Kids and relatives got to spend time together, we got to scuba dive without fretting about the kids, and Nana and Judy got a nice vacation and time to relax.

(plenty more to post later.  For now, just a stub to the picture.  Here’s the deal with the pictures… I’ve loaded the same set to two places.  I want opinions about which place you prefer.  Where do you like the layout better?  Which is easier to browse?  Or more responsive? etc. )

Disco Duathlon

July 8, 2007 9:40 pm

Yes, another race entry.  Back in January, this was going to be the target race for David’s big, first, Half-Ironman race.  But if you’ve been keeping up, you’ll know that distance event was canceled earlier in the year.  Nonetheless, David was still planning to race the Olympic distance at Disco.

2007 Disco Duathlon

But nature hasn’t been kind to North Texas recently, with record rainfall and flooding.  Most of the lakes, including the one for this race have been closed to boat traffic due to ramps underwater, submerged hazards (oh, like the picnic pavilions), and unsanitary conditions.  So what was to be Disco Triathlon was changed into the Disco Duathlon.  The new Olympic-length race was going to be — 2mi run - 26 mile bike - 6.2mi run.

Though Beth stayed home with the kids this particular weekend, but neighbor Teri was also racing at Disco (the Sprint race).  David finished 6th in his age group, and 16th overall.  A great finish, considering the brutal, oppressive humidity that had even some of the area’s elite competitors walking today.  In addition to race photos of David, you’ll find her race photos in the album, also.  Here’s David’s race report, too.

Tri-Historic McKinney

2007 Tri-Historic McKinney Sprint

Another triathlon — this time, a convenient local Sprint race. David was racing, but Beth brought the kids out to cheer along. The bike course was a somewhat technical, including quite a bit of two-lane coutry roads with rolling hills and turns. David turned in a fanstatic performance, and we cheered him on to a 3rd place win in his age group! (8th overall!) For the first time, he even squeeked in under 20min for his 5k run (3.1 miles)!

Playtri — a big one! (Half-Ironman!)

April 21, 2007 10:05 pm
2007 Playtri Sprint
Our second race weekend was locally in Irving with the Playtri Festival.  It was a two-day event, and Beth started off the weekend with the Sprint race on Saturday, and she was mostly pleased with the results.  The excitement of the weekend centered around David’s accomplishements, however.

David was originally signed up for the Olympic-distance race on Sunday.  However, after Beth’s race on Saturday, we were browsing the expo where we happened to learn that the July race that David has been targeting for his first Half-Ironman triathlon (and training for since January) was being canceled!  Now what makes this interesting is that, as part of the Playtri festival, in addition to the Olympic race on Sunday, there was a Half-Ironman happening at the same time.  In fact, with the July race being canceled, the Playtri race the next day was on the only Half-Ironman until later in the fall.

2007 Playtri Half-Ironman
David wasn’t sure he was ready, as his training plan was only 3/4 completed.  After much debate and encouragement from friends, David swapped his entry for the next day to the Half.  He was nervous about how hard to push the event to save enough energy for the end, but he came in with an amazing 5 hours 28 minute finish.

Congratulations David, you’re a HALF-IRONMAN!!

Quite remarkable for a first-timer!  Way to Go! You can even read the race reports if you want:

Lonestar Triathlon / Houston trip

Lone Star / Houston trip

Our first race of the season was in Galveston at the new Lonestar Triathlon Festival.  The kids had a ball playing with Nana and Frampa in Houston while we raced in Galveston.

2007 Lone Star Sprint

Beth raced on Saturday in the Sprint event.  It was her first race back since the birth of Ryan, and she had a great start to the season.  It even poured buckets of rain during her run, and she still finished smiling.  In fact, she came close to a personal best on the run!

2007 Lone Star Quarter

David had a phenominal race on Sunday during the Quarter Iron event.  He came very close to earning a medal, a first at this distance for David.   We also had a nice gathering with family in Houston after the event where we celebrated Alexa’s birthday a second time and saw Ali’s finished remodeling.

Springtime Fun

March 13, 2007 9:54 pm
birthday bike

I splurged for David’s birthday and bought him a new triathlon bike.  He deserved it with his training discipline and promising race results in the past.  He is delighted to give it a try at his next race.

{David’s note: And what a bike!!  A 2007 Cervelo P2C.  I see personal records falling like dominos… if only I can get this ‘engine’ up to the task. :-) }

Then there are a some pics of the kids around the house or at play events.

RunBiTri (January)

January 28, 2007 1:37 pm
2007 RunBiTri (January)

It was a chilly morning for my first race of the ‘07 season. Fortunately, it was another in the ‘reverse Sprint’ series, so jumping in the pool was the last thing we did, instead of the first. I placed 2nd of 9 in my age group, and missed a top 10 overall finish by seconds (probably because of a missed turn on the bike). But it was a fun day. Race report is here.

Sugar Land Turkey Trot

November 23, 2006 4:57 pm
Sugar Land Turkey Trot 2006

We went to Houston this year for Thanksgiving, and I decided I’d get in some exercise Thanksgiving morning.  You know - something to reduce the guilt of I was sure to earn later that day from feasting at lunch.  Finish Line Sports hosts an annual 5 mile Turkey Trot out in Sugar Land.  With my recent half-marathon training, I was feeling adventurous, so I got up early and ran from my parent’s house over to the start in Sugar Land, nearly 10 miles away.  It was quite the warmup.  The Trot itself was nice, and I enjoyed it.  The race ran through the local neighborhood and my good friends, the Parrs, were out cheering us on.

Stop by the Parr's

After the Trot, I jogged back through the neighborhood to the Parr’s house.  Beth drove over from my parents, bringing a change of clothes and the kiddos.  We had a wonderful visit and got to meet Steve’s newest, Julia, and see how much Bailey had grown.  We didn’t take a many pics as we should, but here are a few.

The Half

November 4, 2006 11:10 am
The Half - 2006

Woo hoo!  I (David) survived my first half-marathon today at The Half, down at White Rock lake.  I had a great race, stuck to my plan, and my final time — 1:53:00, a full seven minutes faster than I had hoped.  I don’t have much experience at this distance (ok, none), so I was really pleased with this result.

The Half race reportI even chanced across a few friends from work at the start, which made for a pleasant way to start and end the the race cheering for each other.  The full race report is here.

A winner at RunBiTri !!

October 22, 2006 9:20 pm

Well, I had the chance for one more race this year, and I took it.  This one was intriguing because it was a reverse triathlon.  That’s right; instead of the normal Swim -> Bike -> Run, this event went in the order Run -> Bike -> Swim.

2006 RunBiTri

It was definitely interesting.  Switching the events around led to some different tactics and challenges, such as keeping my run pace under control so I wasn’t too tired once I hit the bike.  The bike course covered some challenging hills in Keller.  It didn’t help that it was really chilly that morning.  The swim, however, was probably one of the hardest I’ve ever done.  When I jumped in the water, my arms simply did not want to move.  I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere.

But here’s the best part…  on my last race of the season… not only did I place for the first time…, but I won my age group!  Woo hoo!  If you’re the kind that wants details, you can read about them in my race report.

Stronebridge Ranch triathlon

October 1, 2006 7:44 pm
2006 Stonebridge Ranch

The last big race for the season.  Well, not big in terms of distance (it was a Sprint event), but big in the fact that it was a race I had sort of intended/hoped to do again this year.  I had a lot of fun, and was pleased with my results, especially given my lackluster training since Ryan was born.  You can read about it HERE.  I finished 12th out of 70 in my age group, and our friend Teri placed 3rd in hers!

Roof Dog Run

September 30, 2006 4:53 pm
Roof Dog Run

The whole family turned out for the first annual charity Roof Dog Run.  Beth jogged the 1 mile event with the kids in the double stroller.  David raced the 5K, coming in 1st in his age group and 3rd overall!  For his effort, his trophy was a little stuffed dog sitting on top of a small doghouse.  Our friends Scott and Kelly Head were there, with thier kids Lauren and Sarah. (As always, click the pic for more.)

River Cities triathlon

August 6, 2006 8:00 pm

Why, yes, I did leave town to race the weekend before my son was to be born.  (Amazingly, Beth hadn’t changed the locks when I returned.)

River Cities Tri

It was a great race, and I had a good time.  I’m glad I got to end the competitive part of the season with such a fun event.  I did about how I expected, though a great bike segment was countered by some problems on the run.  Click the image or HERE for a couple of pics, and you can read my full race report (with the same pics) at RCT race report.

No Sweat Aquathon

April 29, 2006 8:58 pm
2006 No Sweat Aquathon

My first Dallas event of the year was the No Sweat Aquathon, conveniently located up at Stonebridge Ranch fairly close to the house.  Unlike a full triathlon, the aquathon only has a swimming and running leg.  I ran the “long course” option, meaning a 1500m swim followed by a 10k run. All-in-all, it was good for a small race, and nice to have some Olympic-distance open water practice.  There are just a couple of running photos in the gallery (click the picture to get there), or click here for the race report.
